Paul P. Schmitt

Paul P. Schmitt, 90, 1847 Finley St., formerly of Peosta, Iowa, died at 1:50 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 8, 1996, at The Finley Hospital.

Because of renovations at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery. Friends may call from 3 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main St., where there will be a parish scripture service at 4:30 p.m.

Prior to his retirement, Mr. Schmitt was a well-known Peosta farmer.

He was born on April 10, 1906, near Asbury, Iowa, son of Bernard G. and Katharine (Potts) Schmitt. He married Margaret Burns on Feb. 26, 1935, at Holy Family Catholic Church, New Melleray, rural Peosta; she died on July 17, 1994.

He was a member of St. Anthony's Parish, Dubuque County Farm Bureau and the United Commercial Travelers, where he served as past grand counselor for the state of Iowa.

Surviving are a daughter, Mary Kay (Ronald) Ruden, of Hazel Green, Wis.; a son, Robert B. (Mary Jo) Schmitt, of Peosta; a son-in-law, Peter Henkels, of Dubuque; 11 grandchildren, Robert Schmitt, Jr., Bill, Randy, Lori and Rod Schmitt, Cindy Westhoff, Jana Wangard, Amy Ruden and Terry, Todd and Troy Henkels; three great-grandchildren; four sisters, Mrs. Marie Schmitt, Mrs. Lucille Tarnutzer, Mrs. Marcella Sahm and Mrs. Katherine Klein, all of Dubuque, and three brothers, August "Gus" Schmitt, Carl (Madeline) Schmitt and Bernard Schmitt, all of Dubuque.

He also was preceded in death by a daughter, Marjorie Ann Henkels, in 1969.

A Paul P. Schmitt Memorial Fund has been established.
