Death claimed another prominent citizen of this community when Charles J. McLees passed to his eternal reward Monday at eleven o'clock, p. m. The end came following an illness of long duration, at Mr. McLees' home in Washington Township.

Mr. McLees was a highly thought of man in this community where he lived his entire life actively engaged in farming. He had a genial personality; an excellent character and his death removes from this earth an individual whose many friends join his sorrowing relatives in mourning his departure.

Charles James McLees was born in Richland Township, Jones County, July 2nd, 1863, the son of George and Mary Murray McLees. He was married June 19, 1894 to Miss Anna Seery at St. Martin's Church, Cascade, by the late Rev. L. Roche and took up farming which remained his occupation throughout life. He is survived by his wife, three sons, Herbert of Chicago, Ill., Carl of Manhattan, Kans., Harry, at home, and two daughters, Geraldine of Cascade and Mrs. Vincent (Stella) O'Donnell of Chicago, Ill. One son, George, two brothers and seven sisters preceded him in death. He is survived, also, by three grandchildren.

Funeral services, wore conducted at St. Martin's Church, here, Wednesday morning at which time a requiem high Mass was celebrated. Officers of the mass were: Rev. T. Rooney, celebrant. Rev. B. H. Skahill, Columbia College, deacon; and Rev. Father Malone of Garryowen, sub-deacon. Interment was made in the Cascade Catholic Cemetery.

Mr. McLees was a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters, a devout Catholic and died fortified by the last rites of that religion.

The honorary pall bearers were Eugene Sheckle, Peter Neyans, Michael Neiers, George Sauser, James Moran and Robt. Kean.

The active casket bearers were: W. B. Fagan,
Leo Skahill, Ernest McGrane, Geo. Rogers, Thos. McGovern, Chas. Oeschger, C. J. Devlin and Peter Mullady.

Those relatives from out of town attending the funeral, besides many friends were: Mr. and Mrs. Jos. Waddick, Earl and Pearl McLees, Monticello; Mrs. Henry Seery and daughter Grace and Elmer Smith, Waterloo; John and Joe Seery, Mrs. John Gavin and son Daniel, Ryan; Jim Elliot, Farley; Will Elliott and Rita and Joe E., Dubuque.
