Mary Lockey was born June 9, 1818, at Gunnerside, Yorkshire, England, and was married July 8, 1840 to John Lockey.

The family came to the United States in 1846, locating at Dubuque, Iowa where Mrs. Lockey lived until after the death of her husband on February 11, 1874.

In 1879 she moved to Helena joining four of her sons who were then located here. On May 13, 1898, at age 80, Mary died from hemophagia at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Emile Brulo, 703 Eighth Avenue. Her attending physician was Kellogg. She was the mother of three daughters and seven sons, two daughters and four sons survived her – Mrs. Jennie Bowman, of Anamosa, Iowa, Barnard Lockey, of Everly, Iowa, Richard and John W. Lockey, Mrs. Sarah E. Brulo, of Helena, and James T. Lockey, of Winston, Montana. Two of her sons, George W. "Will" and Joseph died in Bozeman in 1882.

Her funeral services were held at St. Paul's Methodist Episcopal Church; Rev. W.W. Van Orsdel and Rev. E. M. Dugger officiated.

Mary's body was temporarily buried in the Masonic Section of the Benton Avenue Cemetery and later removed and shipped to Dubuque, Iowa for final interment in the Center Grove Cemetery. (Helena Independent, 5/14/1898)
