Lou was born July 1, 1920 on the family farm in Luxemburg, Iowa, daughter of Peter and Anna (Maiers) Stronck. She attended school at Holy Trinity Catholic School in Luxemburg, Iowa.

She was united in marriage to Joseph O. Vaske on January 27, 1942 in Luxemburg, Iowa. She was a dedicated farm wife and homemaker. Together Joe and Lou farmed southwest of Farley, Iowa for over 40 years and were blessed with six children. In 2011 Lou moved to Eagle Pointe Place in Dubuque and then to Hawkeye Care Center in July 2015. Lou was deeply committed to her faith and was an active member of St. Joseph’s Parish in Farley. She had been a member of the Catholic Daughters of the America’s Presentation Court #1460 of Farley for more than 57 years.

Lou was very involved in her community and she volunteered at the Dyersville Doll House Museum in Dyersville for many years. She also taught CCD for special needs children. She belonged to the St. Joseph’s Resurrection Choir and was active in the CEW community.
Lou was first and foremost a homemaker who was an excellent cook and baker. She was well known for her famous chocolate chip cookies. Everyone was always welcome in her home and no one ever left hungry. She enjoyed working in her vegetable and flower gardens. Lou was also a wonderful seamstress making many garments for herself and her family even making all the girls prom and homecoming dresses. She also loved to crochet and quilt and made many beautiful quilts and afghans. Joe and Lou enjoyed bowling, golfing, traveling, dancing, and playing cards but her greatest joy was time spent with her family, especially her grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchild. Each child held a special place in her heart. Over the years she reached out to so many with cards, phone calls, and prayers in her very own ministry of caring. Lou kept an active on going prayer list. Many “care packages” were delivered to those who were sick, homebound, elderly or just lonely.

Lou was the oldest living relative of the Vaske-Stronck families and treasured seeing her nieces and nephews and their families. She will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Those left to cherish her memory are her four children, Mary (Rick) Rauen of Farley, IA, Linda (Bob) Sigwarth of Dubuque, IA, Joe (Diane) Vaske of Freeport, IL, Jim (Karin) Vaske of Inver Grove Heights, MN, and her sons-in-law, Dennis Recker of Dyersville, IA and Jack Banwarth of Dubuque, IA; her 19 grandchildren, Jeff Recker,Randy Recker, Abby( Andrew) Smith, Brad Banwarth, Adam (Sarah) Banwarth, Stacey Rauen, Aaron (Shelli) Rauen, Jared (Tammy) Sigwarth, Rachel (Jason) Taylor, Ben (Mary Ella) Sigwarth, Brenda (Mark) Durein, Carla (Ryan) Heuer, Laura Vaske, Joseph Vaske, Rachel (Zachary) Santonil, Peter Vaske, Theresa Vaske, Emma Vaske, John Vaske; her 22 great grandchildren and 4 on the way; and one great great grandchild; and her many nieces and nephews.

Lou was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Joe Vaske on June 20, 1986; her daughters, Kay Banwarth on Dec. 6, 2003 and JoAnn Recker on March 10, 2014; brothers, John Stronck, Clarence Stronck, Gerald (Ruth) Stronck, and Paul Donald in infancy; and sisters, Viola (Al) Schaul and Virgie (Bernie) Kass; brothers and sisters-in-law, Victor (Lucille) Vaske, Bernard (Bernadine) Vaske, Norbert Vaske, and Lorraine Vaske.
