Death of James Hoare

It is with feeling of pain we are compelled to announce the fact that our well known citizen, James Hoare, is dead.

After an illness of almost three weeks, the suffering of which were borne by the deceased with the greatest fortitude, he expired yesterday at 6 ½ o’clock p.m.

Mr. Hoare was one of our leading dry goods merchants, universally admired for his straightforward manner of conducting business; for the knowledge of the goods in which he dealt, and generally for his desire to be just until all men.

Mr. Hoare was born in O’Dorney, near Traiee, County Kerry, Ireland, in the year 1823, and early applied himself to the business which he has so successfully pursued in our city.

Desiring however a wider field of action than that was afforded by the city in which he commenced, he emigrated to the United States in the summer of 1849, and settled in New York City, where in Sept. 1856 he was married to Anne Vaughn, daughter of Charles Vaughn, Esq., Park Kenturk, County Cork, Ireland. His business of dry goods was carried out in New York up to 1857, when the growth and development of the great west attracted his attention, and after due deliberation he resolved to settle in Dubuque. Accordingly in September, of that year, he came to our city and assisted in founding the house of Vaughn & Hoare, with the success of which all our reader are familiar.

Since that time Mr. Hoare established a business of his own, which he conducted up to the time of the attack resulting in his death.

He was a genial, charitable man, beloved by all who knew him and highly esteemed to business circles. He leaves a wife and son to mourn the loss of a devoted husband and affectionate father.
