Funeral of Dr. O’Regan
~
The funeral of Rev. Dr. O’Regan was the most imposing procession ever witnessed in the community; the day was exceeding unpleasant, rain fell in torrents, and the roads in the county were next to impassable, still, the funeral cortege was at least a mile and a half in length. Nine priests were in attendance at his father’s house, and read their several masses. The solemn high mass, with the Cathedral choir to assist, was a very important affair. We rarely ever witnessed such a fine display. From all parts of the county the Catholic clergymen flocked and with countenances denoting bereavement vied with each other in manifestation of friendly feeling for the deceased divine. No person here can remember higher honors shown to a fellow citizen than were bestowed upon this young priest, and we believe no man ever died here, deserving a higher measure of popular regret. Had it not been for the wretched condition of the roads and the stormy nature of the day, the procession would have been the most imposture ever witnessed in Iowa.
