Elsie Ann Appel, 90, of 215 Devon Drive, Dubuque, died at 10:55 a.m. Tuesday, May 1, 2007, at home surrounded by her loving family.

Services will be at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at Summit Congregational United Church of Christ, 2885 Kennedy Road, Dubuque, where friends may call after 3:30 p.m. Thursday. Burial will be in Linwood Cemetery, Dubuque. The Miller Funeral Home, 1185 Route 35 North, East Dubuque, Ill., is in charge of arrangements.

She was born on Feb. 19, 1917, in Dubuque, daughter of Michael and Mary (Freres) Rapp. She married Robert W. Appel on July 23, 1939, in Dubuque. He preceded her in death on Jan. 30, 1997.

Elsie was a wonderful homemaker and devoted wife who helped her husband with the family business, Appel's Crystal Cleaners.

She loved her family, Summit Church, her friends and her summers fishing at their cottage in Prairie du Chien, Wis. She was an excellent cook, loved reading and working crossword puzzles and enjoyed a good game of euchre.

Surviving are two sons, John (Mary Ellen) Appel, of Waco, Texas, and Jim (Gini) Appel, of East Dubuque; four grandchildren, Mike, of Austin, Texas, Eric, of Dallas, Texas, and Lisa and Kristi (Manuel) Alverado, both of East Dubuque; and a great-grandson, River Alverado.

She also was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters, Laura, Mollie and Edna; and two brothers, John and Arthur.

Memorials may be given to Summit Congregational Church.
