Alta M. Appel, 75, of Ocala, Fla., formerly of Dubuque, died of cancer Sunday, June 15, 1997, in Ocala.

Memorial services were in Ocala. Burial of the cremated remains will be in Linwood Cemetery, Dubuque, at a later date. Information was provided by the Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service, Waterloo, Iowa.

Mrs. Appel worked at Dubuque Bank and Trust and later with the United States Department of Agriculture in Epworth, Iowa.

She was born on Aug. 26, 1921, in Dubuque, daughter of Oden and Bessie (Oakley) Brown. She married Fred Appel on Dec. 10, 1947, in Dubuque; he died in 1985.

She was active in the Dubuque American Legion Auxiliary.

Surviving are a daughter, Jolene Bensusan, of Ocala; five grandchildren; and a sister, Helen O'Brien, of Waterloo.

She also was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, George Brown.

Memorials may be given to The Finley Hospital and Summit Congregational United Church of Christ, both in Dubuque.
