James A. Angelos, 88, of Good Samaritan Society, 700 Waverly Road, Davenport, Iowa, formerly of 1145 McGregor Drive, Dubuque, passed away on Saturday, July 19, 2014, at Good Samaritan Society.

Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. today at Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Westview Funeral Home & Crematory, 2659 Kennedy Road, where the family will greet friends starting at 1 p.m. until service time at the funeral home. Burial will be in Linwood Cemetery.

The son of Greek immigrants, James "Costa" A. Angelos was born on Oct. 31, 1925, in Dubuque, son of Andrew D. and Vera T. (Vrotsos) Angelos. He married Helen M. Petrakis in Dubuque on June 6, 1948, at St. John's Episcopal Church. She died on April 9, 2011.

Baptized Konstantinos, he was one of six children of a family that traced its Greek heritage to the villages of Tsarartsa (modern name, Chrissokelaria) in the prefecture of Messinias on his father's side, and Karlovasi on the island of Samos on his mother's side.

He served in the Navy during World War II as a pharmacist's mate aboard the S.S. George A. Johnson, including at a Repair & Security Base at Bahia (Salvatore), Brazil; finishing his tenure at the Naval Ordnance Plant in Louisville, Ky. From 1965 to 1973, he was a member of Ready Naval Reserve.

He was employed at John Deere Dubuque Works and owned and operated the University Inn (Goats) restaurant from 1952 to 1957. He also worked at the Dubuque Packing Co., from which he retired in 1982.

He received a private pilot's license in 1967. He enjoyed golf, music, and time spent with his children and grandchildren.

Survivors include a daughter, Andrea S. (John R.) Ellerbach, of Whittier, N.C.; a son, Michael C. Angelos, of Davenport, Iowa; granddaughters, Aurora J. (Jason A.) Hawk, of Punxsutawney, Pa., and Natalie S. (Larry J.), Cadile, of Homer City, Pa.; sisters, Helen Hemmer, of Independence, Iowa, and Molly Hudson, of Ames, Iowa; a sister in-law, Sara "Sally" Daisy (Robert) Mason; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by grandparents, Theodore G. and Irene E. (Skondrianos) Vrotsos; a brother, Andrew "Tykie" A. Angelos; sisters, Irene Howes Foster and Mary Moore; and brothers-in-law, Maurice B. Howes, Theodore J. Foster, Donald E. Moore, Donald J. Hemmer and H. Bruce Hudson.
