Helen M. Angelos, 87, of 125 W. Ninth St., formerly of 2555 Central Ave., died Saturday, April 9, 2011, at The Finley Hospital, Dubuque.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. today at St. Elias the Prophet Greek Orthodox Church, 1075 Rockdale Road, with the Rev. George Pyle officiating. Friends may call after 9:30 a.m. today at the church. The Siegert-Casper Colonial Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 390 N. Grandview Ave., is in charge of arrangements.
The daughter of Greek immigrants, Helen M. Petrakis was born on Dec. 22, 1923, in Dubuque, to Sarantos/Charles K. and Mary A. (Antonopoulos) Petrakis. She was one of five children of a family that traced its Greek heritage to the villages of Koniditsa on her father's side and Vroulia (modern name: Sellasia) on her mother's side, both in the prefecture of Lakonias. She graduated from Dubuque Senior High School in 1941.
She married James A. Angelos on June 6, 1948, at St. John's Episcopal Church, Dubuque.
She worked at the family-owned Busy Bee Cafe and later jointly owned and operated the Fulton Motor Court and Fulton Apartments for many years until retirement in 1980.
Helen enjoyed time spent with her children and grandchildren.
Surviving are a daughter, Andrea S. (John R.) Ellerbach, of Newburg, Pa.; a son, Michael C. Angelos, of Davenport, Iowa; granddaughters, Aurora J. (Jason A.) Hawk, of Punxsutawney, Pa., and Natalie S. Ellerbach, of Homer City, Pa.; a sister, Stella "Dikki" M. Psihoyos, of Dubuque; a brother, Gus "Deno" C. Petrakis, of Freeport, Ill., and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Louie C. Petrakis; her sister, Evelyn "Keo" M. (Edward B.) Dissell; a brother-in-law, Nicolas K. Psihoyos; and a sister-in-law, Margot J. (Mathey) Petrakis.
Memorials may be given to St. Elias Greek Orthodox Church, 1075 Rockdale Road, Dubuque, IA 52003.
