George Luck Dead - One of Dubuque's Oldest Citizens Passes Away

George Luck, one of the oldest native born residents of Dubuque, passed away this morning at 3:00 o'clock at the Finley hospital. The announcement of Mr. Luck's death caused universal sorrow, for, as a citizen, soldier, neighbor and father, he was above reproach. During the last year of his life Mr. Luck was in ill health, an affection of the heart being the cause of his death.

George Carrol Luck was born in Dubuque, Iowa, May 2, 1836, and he was therefore one of the oldest residents of the city. He always made this city his home and when the war broke out he became a member of the Twenty-first Iowa infantry.

His war record is an enviable one. Old soldiers speak of his gallantry and declare that he was one of the bravest of the brave. When the war was over Mr. Luck returned to Dubuque and like thousands of other Union soldiers resumed the pursuits of the citizen in that quiet, orderly manner that astounded the world.

He was a plasterer by trade and was looked upon with respect by everyone.

In 1866 he was united in marriage to Miss Sarah Z. Harris, who preceded him to the grave several years ago.

An only son Charles B., survives Mr. Luck and a telegram conveying the sad news of his father's death has been sent to the young man at Gainesville, Texas. Until word is received from him no date will be set for the funeral.

Comment on the character of Mr. Luck seems out of place, for he was well and favorably known to all old citizens. A distinguishing trait of his character, however, was his strict adherence to honesty and upright conduct. Old residents say that once he gave his word there was no doubt as to his keeping it. As a soldier he was noted for fearless devotion to duty, and serving all through the war, he was in many bloody encounters. A good citizen, he always was concerned about matters of state and whenever called upon did his share in upbuilding the city.

Mr. Luck was a member of the Julian Lodge, I.O.O.F., and of the G.A.R. The latter organization will have charge of the funeral.
