A Soldier of France - Was a Member of Napoleon's Imperial Guard

Frank Herard, an old settler and respected citizen of Cascade, died at his home in this city at 11 o'clock a.m., Tuesday, after an illness of three weeks, says the 'Pioneer'. Excepting this fatal illness he had never been ill a day in his life, sufficient to compel him to take to his bed, and he carried his 83 years lightly.

Mr. Herard's early years were notable as he participated in some of the stirring events that transpired during the reign of Napoleon III in France, when the latter overthrew the republic and later proclaimed himself emperor. Mr. Herard was a soldier in the French army and witnessed and participated in many of the contentions that raged in unhappy France, particularly when an imperial guardsman.

Mr. Herard was born June 23, 1820, at Grandorff, Slerck, department of Meur the et Mosselle, France. He joined the artillery December 18, 1843, and was raised to the rank of brigadier January 4, 1848. Was discharged, December 31, 1849, as soldier in the artillery. On the 16th of June 1850, he joined the gendarmerie, and became gendarme of the garde imperiale in 1852, remaining in that service until Sept. 1, 1855.

He was married March 8, 1856, to Miss Mary Kearns at Asais Lutging, and shortly afterward sailed for the United States, and came direct to Cascade, where he had continuously resided. He entered the employ of T.J. Chew, Sr., soon after coming here.

Mr. Herard was a good citizen, well and favorably regarded by a host of friends. He leaves to mourn his death, his wife and the following children: P.J. Herard of Cascade; Lizzie, wife of John F. Sauser of Worthinton; Annie, wife of John B. Altman, of Cascade; Nicholas, Susie and Lora of Cascade, and George, of Thermopolis, Wyoming.

The funeral was held yesterday morning at 9 o'clock from St. Mary's church, Rev. J.B. Albers officiating.
