Gerard P. "Jerry" Toomey, 66, of 1018 Levon Drive, died Monday, June 13, 2005, at Homestead Hospice, Fort Wayne, Ind.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, Dubuque. Burial will be in St. Matthew Cemetery, Sherrill, Iowa, where military rites will be accorded by the Dubuque Marine Corps League. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. today at Siegert-Casper Colonial Funeral Home, 390 N. Grandview Ave., Dubuque. Friends also may call after 9:30 a.m. Friday at the church.
He was born on Feb. 18, 1939, in Scranton, Pa. He entered the Air Force on March 6, 1957, and was honorably discharged in March 1961.
He married LeeAnn Schumacher on March 23, 1963, at St. John Lutheran Church, Waverly, Iowa.
While his children were young, he was Scout Master in Shell Rock, Iowa, and for many years, he drove a tour bus and the Dubuque City Bus.
In 1984, Jerry graduated from Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa, with a bachelor of arts degree in religion, and moved to Dubuque with his wife, LeeAnn, where he attended Wartburg Theological Seminary. He was installed as deacon of St. Matthew Lutheran Church (LCMS), Sherrill, in l998, and served until 2003.
Surviving are his wife, LeeAnn; two sons, Major John and Heidi Toomey, of Tampa, Fla., and David and Julie Toomey, of St. Louis; a daughter, Kathleen and Robert Selle, of Providence, R.I.; eight grandchildren, Amanda, Emily and Sean Toomey, Kathryn and Nicolas Toomey and Anna, Erin and Kaitlyn Selle; a sister, Helen (Wm.) Gallagher, of Milton, Pa.; a sister-in-law, Carolyn Toomey, of Coopersburg, Pa.; his mother-in-law, Luceal Schumacher, of Waverly; a brother and sister-in-law, John and Carol Schumacher, of Fort Wayne, Ind.; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Mary Toomey; a sister, Margaret, in 1979; and a brother, Charles, in 1999.
In lieu of flowers, a Jerry Toomey Memorial Fund has been established.
