BANKSTON, Iowa - Ardell A. Steffens, 78, of 19819 Humke Road, Durango, died Saturday, Aug. 21, 2004, at home.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at St. Clement's Catholic Church, Bankston, with the Rev. Dennis Cain officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. A private family visitation will be held at Reiff Funeral Home, Epworth.

Mrs. Steffens taught school for many years in rural country schools.

She was born on Oct. 21, 1925, in rural Peosta, daughter of James "Clyde" and Esther (Zimmerman) Higley.

She married Nicholas L. Steffens on Aug. 6, 1947, at St. Clement's Catholic Church, Bankston. They farmed in the rural Bankston area all of their lives. He died on Aug. 2, 2004.

She was a graduate of Dubuque Senior High School, and received her teaching certificate from the University of Dubuque.

She was a member of St. Clement's Parish, Bankston, and its Altar and Rosary Society.

Surviving are six children, Robert Steffens, of Dubuque, John Steffens and Paul Steffen, both of Durango, Tom (Cindy) Steffens and Sandra (Charles) Moreland, both of Peosta, and Daniel (Laurie) Steffens, of Sherrill; 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Lenore Denlinger and Lolita Steger, both of Dubuque; and a sister.

She also was preceded in death by a son, James Steffen, on Aug. 19, 2004; and a sister, Jane McKeon.

An Ardell A. Steffens Memorial Fund has been established.
