BANKSTON, Iowa - Nicholas L. Steffens, 83, of 19819 Humke Road, Durango, rural Bankston, died at 2:15 a.m. Monday, Aug. 2, 2004, at Mercy Medical Center-Dubuque, following a long illness.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Clement's Catholic Church, Bankston, with the Rev. Dennis Cain officiating. Burial will be in St. Clement's Cemetery, Bankston, where there will be a flag presentation presented by the American Legion, Farley Post 656. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. today at Reiff Funeral Home, Epworth, where there will be a wake service at 4 p.m.

Mr. Steffens farmed in the rural Bankston and Graf areas all of his life.

He was born on Oct. 10, 1920, in Bankston, son of Nicholas and Mary (Stoffel) Steffens. He married Ardell A. Higley on Aug. 6, 1947, at St. Clement's Catholic Church, Bankston.

He graduated from the former St. Clement's High School, Bankston. He was an Army veteran, having served during World War II.

He was a member of St. Clement's Parish, Bankston, and its Altar and Rosary Society.

Surviving are his wife, Ardell; seven children, James Steffens, John Steffens and Paul Steffens, all of Durango, Robert Steffens, of Dubuque, Tom (Cindy) Steffens and Sandra (Charles) Moreland, both of Peosta, and Daniel (Laurie) Steffens, of Sherrill; 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Lenore Denlinger and Lolita Steger, both of Dubuque.

He was preceded in death by his parents; five sisters, Rose Harks, Marie Smith, Mildred Steffens, Cecelia Lahey and Theresa Lahey; and two brothers, Art and Gilbert.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to St. Clement's Catholic Church, Bankston, and Hospice of Dubuque.
