PEOSTA, Iowa - Charles E. Conter, 85, of 7083 Sundown Road, Peosta, died at 9:05 p.m. Friday, Feb. 24, 2006, at Mercy Medical Center- Dubuque.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Holy Family New Melleray Catholic Church, rural Peosta, with the Rev. Xavier Deitiker officiating. Burial will be in Holy Family Cemetery, rural Peosta, where military rites will be accorded by the Cascade American Legion Post 528. Friends may call from 3 to 7:30 p.m. today at Reiff Funeral Home, Cascade, where there will be a wake service at 4 p.m.

He was born on Jan. 19, 1921, in Cascade, son of Jacob and Mary (Shaffer) Conter. He was a graduate of the former St. Mary's High School, Cascade.

He married Rita McCarthy on April 25, 1949, at Holy Family Catholic Church, Peosta. The couple farmed in the Peosta area.

He was a member of Holy Family Parish in Peosta, the Peosta Knights of Columbus Council 5513, and the Cascade American Legion Post 528.

He served in the Marine Corps. during World War II, serving in the South Pacific.

Surviving are his wife, Rita Conter, of Peosta; two sons, Mike (Bev) Conter, of Peosta, and Jim (Olga) Conter, of Las Cruces, New Mexico; six grandchildren, Jill (Chad) Gehl, Betsy, Mark, Paul, Joshua and Dylan; and three great-grandchildren, Madison, McKenna and Mia Gehl.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, Terry Conter and Tommy Conter; two brothers and three sisters.

A Charles E. Conter Memorial Fund has been established.

The family would like to thank the nurses and staff at Mercy Medical Center- Dubuque, for the wonderful care given to Charles.
