PEOSTA, Iowa - Rita M. Conter, 85, of 7083 Sundown Road, Peosta, died at 10:55 p.m. Monday, Dec. 14, 2009, at Shady Rest Care Center, Cascade.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Dec. 21, at Holy Family Church, New Melleray, rural Peosta, with the Rev. Richard Kuhn officiating and the Rev. Xavier Dieter concelebrating. Burial will be in Holy Family Cemetery, rural Peosta. Friends may call from 2 to 7 p.m. today at Reiff Funeral Home in Cascade, where there will be a wake service at 5 p.m.

She was born on Aug. 4, 1924, in Dubuque, daughter of Michael "Jay" and Frances (Desmond) McCarthy. She received her education in the one-room brick School House No. 8 in rural Peosta, and is a graduate of the former Peosta High School.

She married Charles E. Conter on April 25, 1949, at Holy Family Catholic Church in Peosta; he preceded her in death on Feb. 24, 2006. The couple farmed in the Peosta area. Rita was always proud to be a farmer and farm wife, and was especially proud when their farm was deemed a Century Farm, as she had lived there all her life.

Rita was a member of Holy Family Parish in Peosta, and a member of its Rosary Society.

Surviving are two sons, Mike (Bev) Conter, of Peosta, and Jim (Olga) Conter, of Las Cruces, N.M.; six grandchildren, Jill (Chad) Gehl, Betsy, Mark, Paul (Tricia), Joshua and Dylan; and three great-grandchildren, Madison, McKenna and Mia Gehl.

She also was preceded in death by her parents; and two sons, Terry Conter and Tommy Conter.

A Rita M. Conter Memorial Fund has been established.
