Monica Brown Schulte Digman, 85, of 11474 Robin Hood Drive, died Sunday, Sept. 19, 2010.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 23, at Holy Ghost Catholic Church. Burial will be in Holy Family Cemetery. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 22, at Siegert-Casper Colonial Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 390 N. Grandview Ave., where there will be a parish wake service at 7:30 p.m.

She was born on June 1, 1925, in Peosta, Iowa, daughter of Leo and Gertrude (McGovern) Brown. She graduated from the former Immaculate Conception Academy in Dubuque in 1942, where she was a cheerleader for two years. After graduation, Monica attended the University of Dubuque and then taught in two rural schools in the Peosta area.

In 1946, she moved to California and married her fiance, Albert Schulte, formerly from Dubuque, on July 3, 1946. They moved back to Dubuque that fall. Together, they had four children, Gary, Peter, Susan and Julie; he preceded her in death on June 16, 1979. She later married Merlin Digman on July 15, 1983, at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Dubuque. Whether it was the luck of the Irish or Monica's personality, she was very fortunate to have found the love of two wonderful men.

Like her mother, Monica enjoyed a good game of euchre and belonged to two card clubs. She loved flowers, enjoyed winning contests, was a wonderful hostess and was famous for her delicious chocolate chip cookies and "Monica hints."

Surviving are her husband, Merlin Digman, of Dubuque; children, Gary (Gerie) Schulte, of Cuba City, Wis., Susan (Steven) Bushman and Julie Schulte, both of Dubuque; stepdaughters, Karen Digman, of Rio Nido, Calif., and Diane Beaves, of Dubuque; stepsons, Gary (Bonnie) Digman, of Guerneville, Calif., Terrence (Gina) Digman, of Ankeny, Iowa, Dennis Digman, of Fairfield, Calif., and Thomas (Claudia) Digman, of Chicago; a sister, Sr. Gertrude Ann, OSF; a brother, Kenneth Brown; a sister-in-law, Elaine Brown; 24 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

She also was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Peter Schulte; a stepdaughter, Carolyn Digman; three sisters, Marcella Miller, Isabella Mueller and Sr. Marcellita, BVM; and three brothers, Cyril, Loras and Mark Brown.

A Monica Digman Memorial Fund has been established.

Online condolences may be left for the family at www.egelhofsiegertcasper.com.

The family would like to thank family friend Helen, the nurses and staff at Stonehill and Hospice of Dubuque, and Dr. Manzel and his nurse Stephanie for all of their wonderful care.
