Violet M. Brown, 90, of 3730 Pennsylvania Ave., formerly of Jeffrey Drive, died Saturday, June 21, 2008, at Mercy Medical Center-Dubuque.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 25, at St. Anthony's Catholic Church. Burial will be in Holy Family Cemetery, Peosta, Iowa. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. today at Siegert-Casper Colonial Funeral Home, 390 N. Grandview Ave, where there will be at wake service at 3 p.m.

She was born on Dec. 19, 1917, daughter of Charles and Emma (Gartner) Burkart in Dubuque County. She married Bernard Brown at St. Anthony's Catholic Church; he preceded her in death on June 7, 1981.

Violet and Bernard farmed together on English Mill Road from 1957 to 1981.

She was a member of the Tri-State Gardening Club, Catholic Daughters of the Americas and volunteered at the Dubuque Arboretum and Discovery Shop.

Violet enjoyed gardening, flowers and playing cards, especially euchre. She also loved entertaining and spending time with her family.

Surviving are two children, Jim (Pat) Brown, of Peosta, and Mary Kay (Bill) Abbott, of Otter Creek, Iowa; three grandchildren, Ann (Steve) Schuster, Beth (Matt) Obberhoffer and Will Tauke; five great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Loretta Brown, of Edgewood, Iowa, and Marguerite Burkart, of Dubuque; and many nieces and nephews.

She also was preceded in death by her parents; five sisters, Helen Breiner, Frances Ege, Elsie Steve, Florence Zalaznik and Hilda Welch; and five brothers, Alfred, Elmer, Lloyd, Carl and Roy Burkart.

In lieu of flowers, a Violet Brown Memorial Fund has been established.
