Services for Robert H. Brown, 79, 2594 Roosevelt St., will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Mueller Memorial Chapel at Linwood Cemetery.

Burial will be in Linwood Cemetery. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. today at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main St., and after 10 a.m. Thursday at the chapel.

He was formerly employed at John Deere Dubuque Works for 32 years, retiring in 1974.

He was born on Aug. 8, 1917, in Hamilton, Ill., son of Franklin and Millie (Ensign) Brown. He died at 3:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 10, 1997, at home.

He married Marie Varner. After she died, he married Letha Lippe on March 16, 1941, in Keokuk, Iowa.

He served in the 15th Army Air Force during World War II and was stationed at Mandeuria, Italy. He was a ball turret gunner on the B-24 Liberator heavy bombers. He was a member of the United Auto Workers Local 94 and John Deere Retirees.

Robert had a great interest in the study of genealogy. He devoted 25 years of his life to researching his family history. After his retirement, he and his wife traveled to meet the people who contributed to his research. In 1991 he published the "Vincent Brown of Kentucky and Ohio" genealogy record.

Surviving are his wife, Letha P. Brown; two daughters, Kathaleen J. (Richard) Schmitz, of Dubuque, and Janice L. Kirchner, of Keokuk, Iowa; three sons, Kenneth L. (Alice) Brown, of Northridge, Calif., Keith L. (Juanita) Brown, of Dubuque, and Robert E. Brown, of Keysport, Ill.; 15 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson; three sisters, Mary Lou (Howard) Schmitz, of Earlville, Iowa, Hope (Harold) Fowler, of Zephyrhills, Fla., and Ruth Ann Moore, of Germany; and two brothers, Frank (Zelma) Brown, of Oroville, Calif., and Walter (Alice) Brown, of Monitor, Wash.

He also was preceded in death by three brothers, Robert H. and Homer Brown and Ralph Petersen; and a sister, Betty White.

Memorials may be given to the Hospice of Dubuque.
