Steven M. Broderick, 42, of 764 Alpine St., died Friday, Dec. 3, 2004.

Services will be at noon Tuesday at St. Raphael's Cathedral, where friends may call after 10 a.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in Holy Family Catholic Cemetery, New Melleray, rural Peosta, Iowa. The Siegert-Casper Colonial Funeral Home, 390 N. Grandview Ave., is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Broderick taught high school in Chicago for 13 years. He had taught at Central Alternative High School for the past seven years.

He was born on May 5, 1962, in Dubuque, son of Ross and Shirley (Tranel) Broderick. He married Kim Swift on July 16, 2003, in Castle Danger, Minn.

Steven graduated from Wahlert High School in 1980. He received his bachelor of arts degree in English and journalism from Iowa State University, Ames. Steven also received a master's degree in curriculum from National Louis University in Chicago, and a master's degree in special education from Clarke College, Dubuque.

He was a masterful teacher who enriched the lives of his students with his creativity and passion.

Steve was a great lover of animals, especially his dog, Abbey.

He spent some of his best times playing music and fishing.

An unwavering, spirited Cubs fan, Steve found much inspiration and joy in Ron Santo.

Surviving are his wife, Kim Swift, of Dubuque; three stepchildren, Karen Clayton, of Chicago, and Richard and David Clayton, both of Dubuque; his parents, Ross and Shirley Broderick, of Dubuque; a brother, Dan (Nancy) Broderick, of Mequon, Wis., and their children, Andrew, Sara and Kelly; three sisters, Julie (Jim) Fischer, of Onalaska, Wis., and their children, Sam and Lindsey; Laura (Jim) Mulgrew, of Dubuque, and their children, Ben, Noah, Jack and Madeleine; and Mary (Chris) Luedtke, of North Liberty, Iowa; and his maternal grandmother, Mary Tranel, of Cuba City, Wis.

A Steven Broderick Memorial Fund has been established to start a scholarship fund at Central Alternative High School.

Steve's family wishes to extend a special thank-you to Father Tom and Father Brendon at New Melleray Abbey.
