PEOSTA, Iowa - William A. Brehm, 76, of 9919 Cottingham Road, Peosta, died Saturday, April 26, 2008, at home with his family by his side, following a spirited battle with cancer.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, April 28, at Holy Family Church, New Melleray, rural Peosta, with burial in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 1 to 6 p.m. today at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road, Dubuque, where there will be a wake service at 5 p.m. Friends also may call after 9 a.m. Monday at the church.

He was born on Oct. 7, 1931, in Asbury, son of John L. and Theresa M. (Schiessl) Brehm. He married Ivadell M. Burns on Sept. 9, 1958. Together they shared almost 50 years of marriage and received an early 50 year blessing from the Rev. Xavier Dieter, OCSO.

He served in the Navy on board the USS Carter Hall from 1955 to 1957. Following his military service he raised his six sons on his dairy farm in rural Peosta.

Following his retirement from farming he lived with his wife close to the farm, where he continued to be active. He was a hard working, honest, giving man who could fix anything and could solve any problem.

He was a member of Holy Family Church. He served the Dubuque County Holstein Association, Library Board, and Pork Producers.

He loved spending time with his family, and they are very proud of him.

Surviving are his wife of nearly 50 years, Ivy; sons, Merlin (Sharon) Brehm, of Savanna, Ill., Patrick (Sheila) Brehm, of Peosta, Philip (Kay) Brehm, of Footville, Wis. Cletus (Annette) Brehm, of Zwingle, and Lyle (Jenny) Brehm, of Dysart; a daughter-in-law, Sue Brehm, of Mt. Carroll, Ill.; grandchildren, Florence, Tiffany, Zachary, Timothy, Nathan, Melissa, Emily, Sawyer, Chloe, Carson, PJ, Charlotte, Hunter, Naomi, Elias, Jonah, Carter, Grant and Adam Brehm; brothers, Earl (Esther) and Paul Brehm, both of Dubuque; sisters, Helen Steffen and Marion (Wilbert) Connolly, both of Dubuque, Rita Ernst and Clara Ernst, both of Bellevue, and Kay (John) Gaul, of Peosta; and brothers-in-law, Tom (June) Smith, of Roscoe, Ill., and Terry (Pam) Burns, of Zwingle.

He was preceded in death by his son, Alvin F. Brehm, in 2001; his parents, John and Theresa Brehm; sisters, Theresa Smith and Margaret Brehm; brothers-in-law, Leo Steffen, Tony Ernst and Lawrence Ernst; and step-father, William Brehm

A William Brehm memorial fund has been established.
