James E. "Jim" Brehm, 74, of Platteville, Wis., and Dubuque, died suddenly Thursday, June 24, 2010, at Southwest Health Center, Platteville, Wis. Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, June 28, at Resurrection Catholic Church, with the Rev. Joseph Hauer officiating. Burial will be in Holy Family Cemetery, New Melleray, where military rites will be accorded by the Iowa National Guard and the Dubuque American Legion Post 6. Friends may call from 2 to 6:30 p.m. today at Hoffmann Schneider & Kitchen Funeral Home, 3860 Asbury Road, Dubuque, where there will be a prayer service at 6:30 p.m.

He was born on May 21, 1936, on the family farm, in rural Dubuque, son of Leonard and Mary (Walsh) Brehm. He married Geri Kopp Brehm on Aug. 5, 2001, in Platteville. Jim proudly served his country with the Iowa National Guard Co. A, 1st 133rd, from 1957 to 1963. He was a longtime member of Church of the Resurrection, Dubuque. All of his life, Jim farmed on Brehm Lane.

He loved being a farmer, and caring for his animals, especially the pigs. He enjoyed taking the grandkids to antique farm equipment shows, and especially liked the Case tractors. Jim loved talking to people, and was known to strike up long conversations with anyone he met. He was interested in everyone, and considered his neighbors to be people who were close to heart, not based on distance. He was a man of deep faith, and will be greatly missed.

Surviving are his wife, Geri Kopp Brehm, of Platteville, Wis.; two children, Ed (Kim Shaffer) Brehm and Tamara (Dave) Bussan, both of Dubuque; three step children, Kelli (Tom) Weigel and Jeff Kopp, both of Platteville, Wis., and Dan (Kori) Kopp, of Campbellsport, Wis.; 11 grandchildren, Heather, Cody, Nick, Brendan, Jake, Tyler "Fred," Ariana, Kordan, Kaldan, Kylie and Caleb; a great-grandchild, Jade; a sister, Jayne (Orville) Thies, of Dubuque; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, JoAnne; and a sister, Jean Brehm.

Memorials may be given to the Jim Brehm Memorial Fund. Online condolences may be left for the family at www.hoffmannschneiderfuneral homes.com.
