CASCADE, Iowa -- Edwin J. Bergfeld Sr., 80, of 22655 Eby's Mill Road, Cascade, formerly of Epworth, died at 12:15 p.m. Saturday, July 30, 2011, at his home in rural Cascade.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 2, at St. Martin's Catholic Church, Cascade, with the Rev. Douglas Loecke officiating. Burial will be in Holy Family Cemetery, Peosta, where military rites will be accorded by the Epworth John White American Legion Post 650. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. today at Reiff Funeral Home, Cascade, where there will be a wake service at 7:30 p.m.

He was born on Jan. 8, 1931, in Delhi, son of John and Veronica (Jaeger) Bergfeld. He received his education in the Zwingle-area schools.

He married Juanita Gansen on Feb. 12, 1952, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Peosta; she preceded him in death on April 23, 2002.

He was employed at Geisler Roofing and farmed. He was later employed at John Deere Dubuque Works.

Edwin was an Army veteran. He was a member of the Epworth John White American Legion Post 650, and St. Matthias Parish in Cascade.

Surviving are six children, Joyce (Andy) Zapf, of Bernard, Jerry (Sharon) Bergfeld, of Leland, Ill., Vince (DeEtt) Bergfeld, of Bernard, Jenice (David) McLees, of Cascade, Edwin (Karen) Bergfeld Jr., of Epworth, and Jeanette (Ken) Mausser, of Bernard; 22 grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; four siblings, Theresa Gansemer, of Rickardsville, George (Joanne) Bergfeld, of Peosta, Julie (Elmer) Schumann, of Dyersville, and Dan (Dianne) Bergfeld, of Bernard; a brother-in-law, Joe Dolanc, of Farley; and a sister-in-law, Shirley Bergfeld, of Dubuque.

He also was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Darlene Dolanc, Gladys Kress and a sister in infancy; two brothers, John Bergfeld and Leo Bergfeld; and two brothers-in-law, Clement Gansemer and Jack Kress.
