Robert A. "Bob" Hannig, 89, of 14777 Ryan Road, died Thursday, Dec. 13, 2012, at home.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Dec. 17, at Holy Family Catholic Church, New Melleray, with the Rev. Xavier Deieter OSCO and the Rev. Michael Podhajsky officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. today at Leonard Funeral Home, 2595 Rockdale Road, where there will be a wake service at 3:30 p.m. Friends also may call after 9 a.m. Monday at the church.

Though his father died when he was young, Bob matured early and learned to cherish the family that he did have, surrounding himself with a few close friends and setting his path early in life. While still in high school at Dubuque Senior, he took an apprenticeship at the Adams Co., and went on to work there as a machinist for 47 years. In those early adult years, he owned and drove Harley-Davidsons, two hot rods that he and his friends built, several speedboats and the pride of his young life, a Taylorcraft airplane.

Then in May 1955, Bob started a new chapter of his life when he married Marcella Irene "Peg" Koch. Together they built their house, a family with three sons and close lifelong friends over their marriage of 57 years.

Bob had a reputation for being able to fix or build anything at work and at home. Over the years, he worked on radios, TVs, bicycles for the neighborhood kids, small appliances, etc. He also rebuilt, repainted and lovingly restored many Volkswagens and always seemed to be dreaming up or working on his next invention.

Bob enjoyed doing things outdoors. He camped, hunted, fished, canoed, bicycled and skied. He never had a care about how many fish were brought home or how many pheasants or squirrels where bagged. That was not the point, but rather these were a means to spend and enjoy the time together with family and friends.

Bob was a kindhearted man who loved animals. He always had family pets and knew and greeted all the neighborhood one as well. He'd always stop to say hello and pet any dog or cat that he came across. Bob had a great life. He worked for and achieved most everything that he needed or wanted for himself and for his family. Best of all, he gave his family and friends a lifetime of wonderful memories.

Surviving are his wife, Marcella "Peg;" his three sons, Richard Hannig, of Manitou Springs, Colo., Ronald Hannig, of Stillwater, Minn., and Robert (Sandi) Hannig, of Garland, Texas; and three grandchildren, Colin, Ryan and Sophia Hannig, all of Stillwater, Minn.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Aloys Hannig and Maryann Morgan; his stepfather, Louis Wagner; brother, Frederick; and sister Carol.

The family would like to thank the nurses and staff of The Finley Hospital, the staff and nurses in the Skilled Nursing Unit at Stonehill Care Center, caregivers of Home Instead and Hospice of Dubuque for all the wonderful care and compassion they gave Bob and his family.
