Mrs. Donald D. (Lucille R. Luchsinger) Butler, 83, of 2095 Ogilby Road, died at 5:30 p.m. Friday, June 29, 2001, at Mercy Medical Center-Dubuque.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Dennis Kitchen Funeral Home, 3860 Asbury Road, where friends may call from 2 to 5 p.m. today. Burial will be in the Asbury (Iowa) Cemetery.

She was born on Dec. 16, 1917, in Sioux City, Iowa, daughter of Clarence and Esther (Poston) Luchsinger.

She moved to Durango, Iowa, in 1920, where she attended grade school. She graduated from Dubuque Senior High School in 1935, and received her teaching certificate in 1936.

She taught school in Durango from 1936 to 1937, when she married Donald D. Butler on June 22, 1937, at the former Asbury (Iowa) United Methodist Church. From 1937 to 1953, she raised her family and worked on the family farm. In 1953, she re-certified and taught grades first through eighth at the Layhe School near Five Points until one-room schools were discontinued in 1965. From 1966 until 1984, Lucille taught elementary school at Audubon and Eisenhower Schools in Dubuque, retiring from the Dubuque Community School District in 1984.

During all her years of teaching, she was attending the University of Dubuque, and graduated with a bachelor of arts degree in education in 1971. From 1984 to 1991, Lucille and Don farmed part time until they retired and moved to Dubuque in 1991.

She was a member of the Grandview Avenue United Methodist Church, the Retired Teacher's Association and the 62 Plus Club.

Surviving are her husband, Donald D. Butler; two sons, Burton (Ellen) Butler and Dean (Patti) Butler, both of Dubuque; a daughter, Janice (Robert) Miller, of Dubuque; nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; a sister, Lois (Warren) Feller, of Grundy Center, Iowa; and a son-in-law, Richard D. "Dick" Anderson, of Dubuque.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Jeanette (Richard) Anderson, on Feb. 1, 1999; and a sister, Fern Kunz.

Memorials may be given to the Independent Blind Society.
