He was born on Dec. 10, 1936, in Dubuque, son of Lester and Celestine (Schlickman) Butler. He married Marilyn Howell in 1980.

He graduated from the former Loras Academy.

He was an active member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church and had three loving pastors, the Rev. Kincaid, the Rev. Anderson and the Rev. Cearlock. He found such comfort in his church and church family and is now at rest in heaven.

He enjoyed golf and reading, but he got the most joy out of spending time with his loving wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and working at his church.

Surviving are his wife, Marilyn Butler, of Dubuque; two children, Wendy (John) Priest, of Dubuque, and Connie (Denny) Goedert, of Bellevue, Iowa; a daughter-in-law, Connie Howell, of Dubuque; five grandchildren, Jamie (Dave) Bahl and Emalee (Mike Konzen) Goedert, both of Dubuque, Jay (Sara) Priest, of Warwick, N.Y., D.J. In lieu of flowers, a Thomas Butler Memorial Fund has been established.

The family would like to thank the nurses and staff at Hospice of Dubuque for their loving care of Tom and support of the family, with a special thank-you to Amy.
