Robert W. Becker, 62, 2855 Balke St., died at 11:10 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 23, 1998, at The Finley Hospital.

Services will be at 11:30 a.m. Monday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, with burial in Mount Calvary Cemetery. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. today at Hoffmann-Schneider Funeral Home, 1640 Main St., where there will be a wake service at 6:30 p.m.

Mr. Becker retired as owner and operator of Edwards Concrete Contractors Inc., Dubuque. He had worked for the previous owner, James Edwards, his lifelong friend.

He was born on Jan. 7, 1936, in Dubuque, son of Herbert and Lorraine (Cushing) Becker. He married Anna Mae Gourley Hoffmann on July 24, 1959; she died on Sept. 26, 1991. He then married Carol L. Miller Haynes on Oct. 17, 1992.

He was a Marine Corps veteran and a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

Surviving are his wife, Carol Becker, of Dubuque; three sons, Herbert John (Judith A.) Hoffmann, of Dubuque, Jason E. (Lyn) Haynes, of LaMotte, Iowa, and Alvin "Lee" Haynes, of Dubuque; three daughters, Carole Ann Carpenter, Joan M. "Peaches" Stover and Debra J. (Dave) Krug, all of Dubuque; 10 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; his mother, Lorraine Becker, of Dubuque; a brother, Donald (Barbara) Becker, of Dubuque; four sisters, Patricia Schnee, Bonnie (Gerald) Roussel, Lynn (Robert) Jochum and Jolene (Bruce) Drapeau, all of Dubuque; and a sister-in-law, Betty Becker, of Cedar Lake, Ind.

He also was preceded in death by his father, Herbert Becker, on June 11, 1976; a brother, Jack Becker, on March 16, 1998; a nephew, Steve Becker, on June 2, 1996; and a brother-in-law, Tom Schnee, on Sept. 10, 1968.

The family requests no flowers. A Robert W. Becker Memorial Fund has been established.

He loved his wife and family dearly. He enjoyed fishing, playing cards and the Dubuque greyhounds. He had a great sense of humor and never took himself too seriously. To know him was to love him.
