Douglas A. Bahl, 51, of Dubuque, passed away Saturday, July 2, 2011, at home, after a long, courageous battle with cancer.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, July 11, at Resurrection Catholic Church, with the Rev. Steve Garner officiating. Burial will be in Resurrection Cemetery. Friends may call from 3 to 7 p.m. today at Hoffmann Schneider & Kitchen Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 3860 Asbury Road, where there will be a wake service at 7 p.m.

He was born on Sept. 28, 1959, in Dubuque, son of Charles and Shirley (Dupont) Bahl. Doug graduated from Hempstead High School in 1978.

He married Kathy J. Miller in 1990 and had two sons, Ethan and Joseph. All brought joy to his life.

Doug grew up on the family farm, just west of Asbury, where he enjoyed farming, hunting, trapping and fishing. He loved his family, friends and fishing at the cabin in Minnesota.

Doug's love of the outdoors took him to Northwest College in Powell, Wyo., where he graduated in 1981. He then transferred to the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, where he graduated in 1983 with a bachelor of science degree in natural resources and wildlife management.

Doug had a great career with the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service, serving in four locations around the state of Iowa, making many friends along the way. He spent

14 years as a district conservationist in Wayne County before moving back to Dubuque to take over his family farm. The Bahl Family Farm had a pumpkin festival for 11 years and still is selling the Christmas trees Doug started.

Doug was active in the St. Francis Catholic Church in Corydon and was on the Iowa Christmas Tree Growers Association Board. He also was very involved with Pheasants Forever for more than 20 years.

Doug leaves many family members behind, including his wife, Kathy, his two sons, Ethan and Joseph, his parents, Charles and Shirley Bahl, two brothers, Kevin (Jody) Bahl, Scott Bahl (former wife, Sarah) and sister, Nancy Koch, all of Dubuque, and a sister, Jean (Steve) Koren, of Prince George, Va.; and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Ralph and Margaret Dupont; paternal grandparents, Joseph and Vi Bahl; father- and mother-in-law, Lonnie and Hazel Miller; uncles, Robert Allen, Robert Betts and Del O'Hea; aunts, Bette Dale, Janet Dupont and Susan Wilson; and cousins, John Allen, Michelle Bahl and Karen Lange.

Online condolences may be left for the family at www.hoffmannschneiderfuneral

Special thanks to Dr. Mark Herman, Sandy and other staff, and the doctors and nurses at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics who gave Doug the best care possible. And thanks to the caring Hospice nurses who were there to comfort us at the end.
