ASBURY, Iowa - Mr. Wilfred R. "Bill" Bahl, 81, of 14727 Asbury Road, rural Asbury, died at 5:20 a.m. Tuesday, April 24, 2001, at Mercy Medical Center-Dubuque.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Resurrection Catholic Church, 4300 Asbury Road, with burial in Resurrection Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. today at Dennis Kitchen Funeral Home, 3860 Asbury Road, where there will be a Resurrection Catholic Church Parish Christian wake service at 5:30 p.m.

Mr. Bahl farmed most of his life in the rural Asbury area.

He was born on Nov. 5, 1919, in rural Asbury, son of George and Mary (Heinz) Bahl.

He married his first wife, Jeanette C. Becker on April 12, 1947, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, in a double ceremony with Bernice Becker and Jerome Meyer. Jeanette (Becker) Bahl died on Aug. 30, 1997. He then married Helen M. (Krogman) Bahl on Jan. 29, 1999, at Resurrection Catholic Church.

Bill grew up in rural Asbury, and graduated from the former Loras Academy in Dubuque. He served on the Dubuque County Board of Supervisors from 1974-87. He was a member of Resurrection Catholic Church, where he served in numerous capacities. He was one of the founding organizers of the Asbury (Iowa) Volunteer Fire Department, where he served as board president for a number of years.

Surviving are his wife, Helen M. Bahl; four sons, Jeffery J. (Janice) Bahl, Terrence G., Wilfred R. Jr. (Vicky) and Martin J. (Linda) Bahl, all of rural Asbury; a daughter, Marie J. (Charles) Miller, of rural Asbury; 18 grandchildren; a great-grandchild; a brother, Eldon "Bub" (Loretta) Bahl, of rural Asbury, two sisters-in-law, Marie C. Bahl, of Asbury, and Bernice (Jerome) Meyer, of Dubuque; two stepdaughters, Linda L. (Duane) Koltes and Christina M. (Robert) DeMaio, both of Dubuque; a stepson, Timothy J. (Michele) Bahl, of Dubuque; seven stepgrandchildren; and six stepgreat-grandchildren.

He also was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers, Clarence, Andy, Joseph, George and Ed Bahl; six sisters, Ida Bahl, Marie Keller, Sister Marie George Bahl, OP, Irene Bahl, Sister Alberta Bahl, OSF, and Mariam Ready.
