Janis M. (Weber) Comer, 68, of Dubuque, passed away peacefully into eternal life while surrounded by her family at home on Monday, May 12, 2014, after an extended illness.

A Mass of Christian burial to celebrate her life will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, May 16, at St. Mary Catholic Church in East Dubuque, Ill., with the Rev. James Parker and the Rev. Dean Smith officiating. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, May 15, at Leonard Funeral Home and Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road. Burial will be in Center Grove Cemetery at a later date.

Janis was born Sept. 17, 1945, in Hanover, Ill., daughter of Herman and Leonetta (Pfohl) Weber. She attended St. Mary's grade school in Galena and graduated from Galena High School in 1963.

She married Wendell G. Comer on July 23, 1966, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Dubuque.

She worked at John Deere Dubuque Works, retiring after 10 years to raise her family. She was actively involved in their school, their activities and as president of the PTA. Janis, along with her husband, Wendell, took great pride in the ownership of the Comer family farm. She was a medical transcriptionist in Dubuque and for Medquist, where her excellent typing and medical term skills served her well.

Her greatest joy was spending time with her family and friends and planning vacations, events and get-togethers. She enjoyed volleyball, card club, camping, crocheting, cross stitching, cruising, collecting, following football and time spent with her dog, Daisy. She was an avid fan of the Indianapolis (Baltimore) Colts. Her grandson, Andy, played a special role in her life and was always there to help her. He cared for her tenderly and always gave her a reason to go on. She loved him with all her heart. She found great joy and love through her children and grandchildren.

Janis was a strong, courageous woman. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, godmother, sister and friend. She loved spending time with friends, being a friend, laughing, hearing a good joke, listening, being mischievous and making others laugh. Her curiosity was insatiable. She had a heart of gold, a sparkle in her eyes and a voice that expressed genuine happiness for others. She is deeply loved, will be greatly missed and will be forever in our hearts.

Surviving are her husband, Wendell, her children, Lisa Comer, of Trotwood, Ohio, Terri Comer, of Washington, D.C., and Brad (Leila) Comer, of Alpharetta, Ga.: grandchildren, Andy, Julia, Andrew and Rafe Comer; sisters, Irene Budden, Rose (Ira) Kunkel, Jean Redman, Mary (John) Trannel, Nancy Miller and Rita (Bob) Leifker; brothers, Jim (Carol) Weber and Joe (Cyndi) Weber; her mother-in-law, Bonnie Comer; sister-in-law, Nancy (Marty) McNamer; brother-in-law, Wayne Comer; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, John; father-in-law, Glenn Comer; brothers-in-law, Gary Comer, Mike Miller, Andy Redman and Don Budden; and nephews, Danny Kunkel, Marvin Redman and Chuck Miller.

In lieu of flowers, a Janis M. Comer Memorial Fund has been established.

The family would like to thank Dr. Ronald Schope, his nurse, Lorie, and the staff of UnityPoint Health-Finley Hospital and Hospice of Dubuque for their loving and compassionate care. Also, a thank-you to Nancy Miller, Mary Trannel, Nancy McNamer and a special thank-you to Father Parker for his support and encouragement.
