Thomas P. Gassman 1950-2015

Thomas P. Gassman, 65, of Epworth, Iowa died Wednesday, July 8, 2015 at Mercy Medical Center in Dubuque, Iowa.

Friends and relatives of Tom may call from 2 to 8 p.m., Friday, July 10, 2015 at the Reiff Funeral Home in Epworth, Iowa, where a wake service will be held at 2:00 p.m., and a Farley American Legion will meet in a body at 6:00 p.m.

Services for Tom will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, July 11, 2015 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Farley, Iowa, with Rev. Michael Schueller officiating. Concelebrating will be Rev. Aloysius Vorwald. Assisting Deacon will be James Kean. Burial will be held in St. Joseph's Cemetery in Farley, Iowa at a later date.

Tom was born January 7, 1950 in Dubuque, Iowa, son of Henry and Catherine (O'Hea) Gassman. He received his education at St. Columbkille's School and is a graduate of Wahert High School in Dubuque. He was employed with UPS until his retirement in 2001. On January 7, 1972 he was united in marriage to Sherry Pfab at St. Columbkille's Catholic Church, she preceded him in death on October 28, 2008. On July 24, 2010 he was united in marriage to Sandy Ross at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Epworth, Iowa.

In Tom's life family always came first, he was a strong supporter of Western Dubuque and served on the school board for 9 years. He also was a tireless volunteer for Hillcrest's Reflections in the Park for many years, along with his band of fun loving, Dubuque loving, and Christmas loving friends he helped transform Louis Murphy Park into a twinkling wonderland each year. He served on the Epworth City Council and served as Mayor from 2012-2014. He was a member of St. Joseph's Parish in Farley and was involved with the CEW Program.

He loved fishing, golfing, basketball and for years coached little league teams.

He is survived by his wife, Sandy Gassman of Epworth, IA; four sons, Aaron (Vicki) Gassman of Epworth, IA, Adam (Jennifer) Gassman of Dysart, IA, Alex Gassman of Epworth, IA, and Andy (Crystal) Gassman of Big Lake, MN; 9 grandchildren; one brother, Bill (Sandy) Gassman of Dubuque, IA.

He is also preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Joseph Gassman and one sister, Louise Gassman.

A Thomas P. Gassman memorial fund has been established in lieu of flowers.
