Mrs. Mary C. Schmitt, widow of Chris Schmitt, Founder of the Dubuque Packing Company, was claimed by death at the home, 1535 Iowa Street, at 9 o'clock Monday morning. She had been ill for the past two months. The funeral will be held Wednesday morning from the home to St. Mary's Church at 9 o'clock. Burial will be made in Mt. Calvary Cemetery.

Mrs. Schmitt was born in Alsace, France, Jan. 8, 1852, and came to this country with her parents, settling in Cincinnati when she was nine months old. She has made her home in Dubuque since 1854.

Mrs. Schmitt was a devoted mother, deeply interested in her family. Always of a genial disposition, fond of society and greatly interested in church activities. She made many friends who will learn of her death with deep sorrow.

She leaves to mourn her loss, four daughters, Miss Tillie E. Schmitt, Miss Lavina P. Schmitt, Miss Louise (Lucy) M. Schmitt, and catechist Julia Marie Schmitt, Huntington, Ind., five grandchildren, three great grandchildren, and a sister Mrs. Joseph Schmitt, also of Dubuque.

Her husband passed away Sept. 26, six years ago: her daughter Mrs. Carl Jungk, in December, 1917, and a sister Mrs. G. A. Stoheben, last February.

The pioneer was a faithful member of the Catholic Church and she attended St. Mary's Parish. She was a promoter of the Rosary Society.
