Dubuque Telegraph Herald and Times Journal May 1873

DEATH OF AN OLD SETTLER – George W. Connell, one of the oldest settlers in Dubuque, and a man at one time very influential in our city, died at his residence on Clay Street near 13th on Tuesday morning.

Mr. Connell was at one time was a member of the city council and interested in various public projects of importance. He was about sixty years of age and leaves a family. The wife of P. W. Crawford is one of his daughters.

One by one the friends and associations of early time pass away and a few short years hence there will be scarcely a living witness of the growth of our city in its infancy. The death of Mr. Connell takes away another of the pioneers and there is general regret. The bereaved family has the sincere sympathy of numerous friends and the community at large in their loss
