FARLEY, Iowa - Irvin J. Roling, 77, of 516 Arnold Ave., Rockford, Ill., formerly of Farley, died Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2001, at 8:58 a.m., at home.

Services will be at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Farley. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Farley, where military rites will be accorded by the Farley American Legion Post 656. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Reiff Funeral Home, Farley, where there will be a wake service at 5 p.m.

Mr. Roling was a cabinet maker and building office maintenance/manager for Northern Illinois Medical Arts Building, Rockford, until his illness in August 2001. He enjoyed many a cup of coffee with his friends at "the building."

He was born on Jan. 4, 1924, in Geddes, S.D., son of John and Mary (Welchert) Roling. He married Margaret Mary Simon on Oct. 1, 1946, at St. Joseph's Church, Farley.

He received his education in the former St. Joseph's School, Farley. He was a Marine Corps veteran, having served for four years during World War II as a corporal. He saw action in Iwo Jima, and witnessed the raising of the flag there.

He was a member of Holy Family Parish, Rockford, and a former member of the Farley Knights of Columbus Council 2001. He was active for many years with the Disabled Adults Organization. Irvin enjoyed traveling with his wife throughout the U.S., Canada and Europe. He was an avid baseball fan, favoring the Chicago White Sox. Above all he loved being with his wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and was eagerly anticipating the birth of his fourth great-grandchild.

Surviving are his wife, Margaret Roling, of Rockford; two sons, Joseph W. Roling, of Rockford, and Richard P. (Mary) Roling, of Chicago, a daughter, Elizabeth M. (Barry) Mendeloff, of Byron, Ill.; and six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Elmer and Harry Roling; and a sister, Rosemary Thomas.

An Irvin J. Roling Memorial Fund has been established.
