FARLEY, Iowa -- Madeline M. Ries, 87, of 302 Third Ave., SW, Farley, died Friday, Aug. 20, 2010, at her home.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Aug. 23, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Farley, with the Rev. Dennis Cain officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Farley. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. today at Reiff Funeral Home, Farley, where the CDA Rosary will be recited at 4:30 p.m. and a wake service will be at 6 p.m.
She was born on Sept. 21, 1922, in Epworth, daughter of Robert and Nettie (Duret) Allen. She was a graduate of Epworth High School.
She married LuVerne Ries on March 4, 1946, at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Holy Cross; He preceded her in death on May 14, 1997.
Madeline was a cook for the Sisters of the Presentation for many years. She later did in-home child care and was known as Grandma Ries to her daycare kids.
She loved quilting and playing cards.
She was a member of St. Joseph's Parish in Farley, a member of it's Altar and Rosary Society and a member of the Farley Catholic Daughters of the Americas-Presentation Court 1460.
Surviving are four children, Loras Ries and Tom (Ellen) Ries, both of Farley, Sue Ann (Kipp) Davis, of Walnut Grove, Mo., and Andrea (Fred) Steffensmeier, of Farley; 14 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Dorene McCarthy and Vivian Kursch, both of Dubuque; a brother, Edward Allen, of Dubuque; and a sister-in-law, Margie Ries, of Dubuque; and several nieces and nephews.
She also was preceded in death by her parents; two sons, LeRoy Ries, on June 16, 1954, and Vernon Ries, on Oct. 6, 2005; and a daughter-in-law, Phyllis "Kitty" Ries.
