ROCKFORD, Ill. - Joseph W. Roling, 56, of Rockford, died Thursday, Aug. 14, 2003, at home, after a sudden illness.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Farley, Iowa, with the Rev. Dennis Cain officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 1 to 4 p.m. today at Honquest Family Funeral Home, 4205 N. Mulford Road, Rockford. Friends also may call after 8 a.m. Monday at Reiff Funeral Home, Farley.

Mr. Roling worked at the information desk at OSF St. Anthony Hospital.

He was born on Aug. 2, 1947, in Rockford, son of Irvin and Margaret (Simon) Roling.

He was a 1967 graduate of East High School, Rockford, and a graduate of the Rockford Business College.

He was a former member of the Rockford Indoor Sports Club, the Rockford Amateur Radio Club and was past president and current member of People First of Illinois, an advocacy group for disabled people. He also was a volunteer for OSF St. Anthony Hospital for 10 years.

He was an avid White Sox fan. He loved all sports and visiting with friends and family in person and online.

Surviving are his mother, Margaret Roling, of Rockford; a sister, Elizabeth (Barry) Mendeloff, of Byron; a brother, Richard (Mary) Roling, of Chicago; four nieces, Tara (Chris) McCarver, of Inver Grove Heights, Minn., Jeni (David) Kahley, of St. Charles, Niki (David Cunningham) Terranova, of Chicago, and Sara Terranova, of Champaign; and several great-nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Irvin J. Roling.

In lieu of flowers, a Joseph W. Roling Memorial Fund has been established.
