FARLEY, Iowa - Earl A. O'Brien, 83, of Farley, died at 9:40 p.m. Sunday, March 8, 2009, at Shady Rest Care Center, Cascade.

Services will be at noon, Wednesday, March 11, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Farley, with the Rev. Dennis Cain officiating and the Rev. Thomas McDermott concelebrating. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Farley, where military honors will be accorded by the Cascade American Legion Post 528. Friends may call from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at Reiff Funeral Home, Farley.

He was born on Dec. 5, 1925, in Peosta, son of Earl and Grace (Callahan) O'Brien. He received his education in the St. Columbkille Schools in Dubuque. He also attended Loras College in Dubuque.

He married Elaine Klostermann on Oct. 20, 1951, at St. Francis Xavier Basilica in Dyersville.

Earl was a World War II veteran, having served in the Navy.

He was employed at John Deere Dubuque Works until 1975.

Earl was a member of St. Joseph's Parish in Farley, and a member of the Cascade American Legion Post 528.

Surviving are his wife, Elaine O'Brien, of Farley; five children, Jeff (Lori) O'Brien and Jennifer (Joe) Beringer, both of Cascade, Jackie (Gerald) Simon, of Farley, Jay (Lisa) O'Brien, of Toddville, and Joan (Mike) Felton, of Solon; grandchildren, Molly Hoeger, Ben O'Brien, Kayla Wilson, Andy Beringer, Doug, Brittney, Emily and Kaitlin Simon, Kali Taylor, Sidney O'Brien, Alexander and Olivia Felton; five brothers, Mike (Joyce) O'Brien, Joe O'Brien, and Terry (Delores) O'Brien, all of Cascade, Pat (Ann) O'Brien, of Dubuque, and Stephen O'Brien, of Walcott; four sisters, Kathleen (Rex) Gogerty, of Hubbard, Joanell (Irwin) McDermott, of Epworth, Lois (Rich) Schlegel, of Fairfield, Conn., and Deb (Bob) Green, of Cascade; and sisters-in-law, Maurna O'Brien, of Cascade, and Mary Ann O'Brien, of Waunakee, Wis.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, George and Ralph O'Brien; a sister-in-law, Monica (Urbain) O'Brien; and two nephews, Tim O'Brien and Phil McDermott.

An Earl A. O'Brien Memorial Fund has been established.
