FARLEY, Iowa - Raymond E. Nelson, 83, of 105 Third Ave. SW, Farley, Iowa, died at 9:20 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 24, 2004, at The Finley Hospital, Dubuque.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Reiff Funeral Home, Farley, with the Rev. Dennis Cain officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Farley, where military rites will be accorded by the Farley American Legion Post 656. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home, where there will be a Farley American Legion service at 7 p.m.

Mr. Nelson worked as sub clerk at the post office in Marshalltown until 1978. He then moved to Farley, where he served as postmaster, retiring on Nov. 5, 1981.

He was born on Sept. 18, 1920, in Milwaukee, son of Carl F. and Charlotte (McGowan) Nelson. He married Elsie T. Quitney on Feb. 22, 1941, at Gesu Church, Milwaukee; she preceded him in death on Oct. 12, 1978.

He was a World War II Army veteran, having served as staff sergeant in Germany.

He was a member of the Farley American Legion Post 656. He also was a former member of the Elk's Lodge, Eagle's Lodge, Moose Lodge and the Polka Club of Iowa.

Surviving are special friends, Larry Hoefer, of Peosta, and Elaine Bisping, of Dubuque; a niece, Rose Ann Wall, of Milwaukee; and nephews.

He also was preceded in death by his parents.

The family of Raymond would like to thank Sue Wagner and the dialysis unit at The Finley Hospital and the doctors and nurses of the intensive care unit at Finley for all the care given to Ray.
