FARLEY, Iowa -- William P. "Bill" Ludwig, 77, of 203 Fifth St. SE, Farley, died at 4:20 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 10, 2010, at Mercy Medical Center-Dubuque.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 14, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Farley, with the Rev. Dennis Cain officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Farley, where military rites will be accorded by the Farley American Legion Post 656. Friends may call from 1 to 8 p.m. today at Reiff Funeral Home, Farley, where the Farley Fire Department will meet at 6:30 p.m., a Farley American Legion Service will be at 7 p.m., followed by the Farley American Legion Auxiliary and a wake service at 8 p.m.

He was born on Nov. 15, 1932, in Dubuque, son of Urban J. and Lucille (Ostwinkle) Ludwig. He received his education in the rural Farley country schools.

Bill was a veteran of the Army, serving from 1953 to 1955, during the Korean War.

He married Dorothy Harter on June 4, 1957, at Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Petersburg.

Bill was employed at Simon Feed Store in Farley, from 1950 to 1991. He later worked for Crop Production and Farley Fertilizer Co. until his retirement.

He was a member of St. Joseph's Parish in Farley and its Altar and Rosary Society, a member of the Farley American Legion Post 656. He also was a retired volunteer of the Farley Fire Department, where he served for 32 years.

Bill's passions were playing euchre with his special friends and family, spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, where he always made everyone feel special.

Surviving are his wife, Dorothy "Dottie" Ludwig, of Farley; five children, Deb (Tom) Maiers and Sharon (Steve) Schroeder, both of Farley, Ron "Tink" (friend, Lee Ann Dieters) Ludwig, of Farley, Karen (Craig) Hoefler, of New Vienna, and Rick (Ann) Ludwig, of Farley; 13 grandchildren, Jeff (Lisa) Maiers, Matt (Michel) Maiers, Kurt Maiers and Kevin Maiers, Luke Schroeder, Brad Schroeder, Lisa Schroeder, Travis Hoefler, Megan Hoefler, Dylan Hoefler, Sophie Ludwig, Robbie Ludwig and Jude Ludwig; two great-grandchildren, Jackson Maiers and Maggie Maiers; a sister, Kay (Kenneth) Becker, of Hopkinton; and brothers, Bob (Lois) Ludwig, Tom (Sharon) Ludwig and Wayne (Carol) Ludwig, all of Dyersville.

He was preceded in death by his parents; twin grandsons in infancy; his mother and father-in-law, Serenus and Mathilda Harter; and a brother-in-law, Henry Harter.
