Marie (Cain) Meloy

Marie J. (Cain) Meloy, 94, of Dubuque, passed away Monday, February 16, 2015, at Luther Manor Retirement Community. A funeral mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, February 19 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. Burial will be at Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Family will greet friends and relatives from 3 - 7 p.m. on Wednesday, February 18 at Hoffmann Schneider and Kitchen Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 3860 Asbury Road, where a prayer service will be held at 2:45 p.m.

Marie was born Sept. 9, 1920, to Paul and Catherine (Cloos) Cain of Dubuque. She married Augustine “Gus” Meloy of Bernard, Iowa, in 1942, at St. Columbkille Church, Dubuque. Together they raised eight children.

She retired after twenty years of service in the dietary department of Marian Hall Infirmary, Mount Carmel. Marie will be missed beyond words by her family; she was their rock. A loving, giving person, she brought joy and comfort to all who knew her.

She is survived by sons Robert, Loras (Sue), and Kevin; and daughters Judith Bandy and Patricia Schissel of Dubuque; and Maureen (Dean) Benda of Tama, Iowa, and Sharon (Jack) Schlueter of Simi Valley, Calif.; 19 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren; one sister, Agnes Huseman; sisters-in-law Irene McMahon, Jeannine Cain, Mary Jane Cain, and Sally Cain; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, a son, Ronald, and siblings Allan, Margaret (Dale) Chambers, Wilma (Melvin) Hingtgen, Robert (Shirley), John, LeRoy, and Donald.

The family would like to thank the staffs at Luther Manor, Medical Associates, and Hospice of Dubuque for their kindness and care for Marie, and a special thank you to Dr. Osama Khatib for many years of excellent care and friendship.
