Dubuque, Iowa

Darda H. (Lubben) Munson, age 90, of Dubuque, Iowa, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family, at 7:35 a.m. on Tuesday, February 3, 2015, at Heritage Manor. To honor Darda's life, funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, February 5, 2015, at the Church of the Nativity, 1225 Alta Vista St., with Rev. Msgr. James L. Miller officiating. To celebrate Darda's life, family and friends may visit from 9:00 a.m. until the time of services at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, February 5, 2015, at the Church of the Nativity, where the Nativity Rosary Society will pray the rosary at 10:30 a.m.. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery where full military honors will be accorded by the Dubuque Marine Corps League. Behr Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Darda was born on May 3, 1924, in Freeport, IL, daughter of Frank and Carrie (Wolfe) Lubben.

Darda graduated from high school and joined the U.S. Navy, serving for 2 years, from 1944 until 1946 as Yeoman Second Class, stationed in Norman, OK.

She was united in marriage with Carl Munson on September 15, 1947, in Sterling, IL. Darda devoted the next 61 years of her life loving him and their family. He preceded her in death on May 25, 2008. She was a devoted mother of 7, grandmother of 20, great-grandmother of 23 and a great-great-grandmother of 2.

At one time she owned and operated Christmas Year Round in Cable Car Square. Darda also worked as an administrative assistant for her partner in life at Carl E. Munson & Associates for many years.

She was a member of the Church of the Nativity, the Legion of Mary Auxiliary, Nativity Guild, the Rosary Society and the American Legion Dubuque Post #6. Darda was a devout Catholic woman who religiously attended 6:30 a.m. Sunday Mass for over 50 years at the Church of the Nativity. She enjoyed all the work she did for her church.

In her free time she also liked reading and making craft projects. In 2011, Darda and her son, Mark, had the privilege of participating in the WWII Dubuque Honor Flight. There she visited Arlington National Cemetery, where her eldest son, William, had served as the first Iowan Selected to guard the Tomb of the Unknown Soldiers in 1972. Her kindness and love was felt by family, friends and strangers throughout her beautiful life.

her many beautiful grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren;

a daughter-in-law,
Kathy Munson, Dubuque, IA;

her sisters-in-law,
Arlene Arduini, Rock Falls, IL,
Mary Jane Billiter, Byron, IL.

Darda was preceded in death by her parents; her loving husband of 61 years, Carl Munson; her son, William Munson; a grandson, Justin Munson; a great-grandson, Joshua Frommelt; and a brother, Robert Lubben.

A Darda H. Munson memorial fund has been established.

The family would like to thank Dr. Kirkendall, the nurses and staff at Hospice of Dubuque and Heritage Manor for all the loving and tender care given to Darda.
