FARLEY, Iowa - Leander H. "Lee" Johannes, 99, formerly of 305 Sixth Ave. NE, Farley, passed away peacefully at 2:53 p.m. Friday, June 1, 2007, at his daughter's home in Norwalk.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Farley, with the Rev. Dennis Cain officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Farley, where military rites will be accorded by the Farley American Legion Post 656. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at Reiff Funeral Home, Farley, where there will be a Dyersville Knights of Columbus rosary at 6 p.m., a Farley American Legion service at 6:30 p.m., and a wake service at 7 p.m.

He was born on Feb. 16, 1908, in Bremen Township, five miles northwest of Dyersville, son of Bernard and Mary (Poire) Johannes. He married Mae McDowell on May 24, 1946, in Dubuque; she preceded him in death on March 20, 1999.

He farmed in the area, then worked at Scherrman Implement until he was called to service during World War II. He served as a corporal in the maintenance motorpool of the 14th Combat Bombardment Wing (H) of the U.S. 8th Army Air Force, based in Norfolk, England.

Mr. Johannes worked for Scherrman Implement of Farley for 27 years as a mechanic and was a millwright at Key City Iron Works in Dubuque for another 15 years. He also operated Lee's Portable Welding from his home in Farley during his retirement.

For the past four years, he had lived with his daughter, Maryetta Pins, in rural Norwalk, near Des Moines.

Lee was a lifetime member of the Dyersville Knights of Columbus Council 1734, a 58-year member of the Farley American Legion Post 656 and a lifetime member of the Dubuque County Conservation Society.

Surviving are two daughters, Maryetta Pins, of Norwalk, and Patricia Puskas, of Waupun, Wis.; a son, Robert Johannes, of Durango; and nine grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild.

He also was preceded in death by his parents, Bernard and Mary Johannes, and two brothers, Clarence and Felix Johannes.

A Lee H. Johannes Memorial Fund has been established.
