FARLEY, Iowa - John E. Hoefer, 85, of 104 Seventh Ave. NW, Farley, died at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, July 20, 2013, at Luther Manor, Dubuque.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 23, at St. Joseph"s Catholic Church, Farley, with the Rev. Michael Schueller officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph"s Cemetery, Farley, where military rites will be accorded by Farley American Legion Post 656 and New Vienna Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7736. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Reiff Funeral Home, Farley, where there will be a wake service at 4:30 p.m. The Farley American Legion Post 656 and New Vienna VFW Post 7736 will meet at 7 p.m.

He was born on Feb. 21, 1928, in Farley, son of Eugene and Katherine (Oberbroeckling) Hoefer. He received his education at the former St. Joseph"s School in Farley.

He married Virginia Scherrman on Oct. 5, 1949, at St. Joseph"s Catholic Church in Farley. The couple farmed in the rural Farley area.

John also was employed as an electrician for J.P. Scherrman"s for 15 years.

John was an Army veteran, having served from 1946 to 1947.

He was a member of St. Joseph"s Parish in Farley, its altar and rosary societies, Dubuque County Farm Bureau, Farley American Legion Post 656 and New Vienna VFW Post 7736.

John enjoyed woodworking, and he had a great talent for being able to fix anything. He was a humble man and lived a life of simplicity, but he will be remembered most for his dedication and unconditional love for his wife and family.

Surviving are his wife, Virginia Hoefer, of Dubuque; three children, Ron (Ginger) Hoefer and Mary Jo (Todd) McDermott, both of Dubuque, and Joanie (Dave Neyens) Wilson, of Anamosa; two daughters-in-law, Nancy (Rick) Heim, of Farley, and Christy (Scott) Deutmeyer, of Dyersville; 13 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; three siblings, Kathleen (Donald) Funke, of Worthington, Charles Hoefer, of Epworth, and Bill (Anna Mae) Hoefer, of Marion; and a brother-in-law, Raymond (Pearl) Scherrman, of Farley.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, Thomas Hoefer and Edward Hoefer; a daughter, Ann Hoefer; three sisters, Clara Kuehn, Genevieve Regan and Helen Haberman; a brother, Maurice Hoefer; three brothers-in-law, Gene Kuehn, Ray Regan and Donald Funke; and three sisters-in-law, Ann Siegert, Norine Hoefer and Clarice "Lavon" Hoefer.

A John E. Hoefer Memorial Fund has been established.
