FARLEY, Iowa - Evelyn L. Friedman, 93, of Dubuque Retirement Community, formerly of Farley, died at 8 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 22, 2013, at her home in Dubuque.

Services for Evelyn will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Dec. 27, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Farley, with the Rev. Michael Schueller presiding. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Farley. A prayer service will be held at 3 p.m. followed by visitation until 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 26, at Reiff Funeral Home, Farley. Family and friends also may call from 9 a.m. until time of services Friday at the church.

She was born on April 22, 1920, in Bankston, daughter of Frank and Amelia (Ovel) Osterhaus. On Nov. 13, 1939, she was united in marriage to Joseph W. Friedman at St. Clement's Catholic Church in Bankston. The first three years of their marriage, the couple rented his parents' farm in the Luxemburg area. On March 1, 1943, they moved to their farm near Farley, which was her home until moving into Farley in 1994 and to Dubuque Retirement Community in 2010.

Evelyn and her husband loved and enjoyed their family, relatives and friends, as well as their children's friends, who were always welcome in their home and where they hosted many overnight guests. Evelyn loved traveling with her husband, Joe, and after his death, she traveled extensively with her family, relatives and friends.

She was a member of St. Joseph's Parish, Catholic Daughters of the America's - Presentation Court 1460, of Farley, for more than 55 years, and of a Bible sharing group in Dyersville for more than 25 years.

She is survived by six children, Connie Hutton, of Albuquerque, N.M., Jan (Sr. Richelle), of Washington, D.C., Philip (Melanie Ohnstad) Friedman and Charles Friedman, both of Minneapolis, Becky (Dick) Sisco, of Dubuque, and Jack (Maureen) Friedman, Dyersville; her six grandchildren, Kimberly (Bill) Searfoorce, of Denver, Colo., Derek (Amy Petersen) Hutton, of Albuquerque, Merredith (Randy Lovstuen) Hutton, of Las Vegas, Joseph Friedman, of Iowa City, Jonathan Friedman, of Milford, and Jared Friedman, of Chicago; her six great-grandchildren; her sisters, Verna Klosterman, of Dubuque, and Babe Kluesner, of Farley; and her numerous nieces and nephews, as well as the Friedman nieces and nephews, all of whom she so loved.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Friedman, March 8, 1979; her parents; her stepmother, Frances (Hermsen) Osterhaus; her son-in-law, Mike Hutton; her oldest brother, Wilfred, in infancy; her brother, Cletus; her sisters, Clarinda Klosterman and Sylvia Breitbach; and all her Osterhaus and Friedman in-laws.
