FARLEY, Iowa - Elizabeth M. Fern Freeze, 79, of 203 First Ave., N.W., Farley, died Thursday morning, July 8, 1999, at home.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Farley, with burial in St. Joseph's Cemetery, where military rites will be accorded by the Farley American Legion Post 656. Friends may call from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. today at Reiff Funeral Home, Farley, where there will be a parish rosary at 3 p.m. and a wake service at 4:30 p.m. There also will be a Farley American Legion Auxiliary Service at 6:45 p.m. today as well as a Farley American Legion service at 7 p.m.

She worked at Mercy Hospital for 20 years as a nurse.

She was born on Jan. 9, 1920, in Farley, daughter of Albert and Cathryn (Ronan) Fox.

She married Earl K. Fern on April 9, 1942, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Farley; he died July 20, 1971. She then married Jack Freeze on April 29, 1986, in Farley.

She graduated from Farley Public School in 1937, and from Mercy School of Nursing in 1941. She served as a first lieutenant in the Army Nursing Corps from 1943 to 1945. She was a member of the Farley American Legion Post 656 and its Legion Auxiliary. She also was a member of St. Joseph's Parish and its Altar and Rosary Society. She enjoyed golfing, bowling and card playing.

Surviving are her husband, Jack Freeze, of Farley; two daughters, Sue Fern of St. Paul, Minn., and Peri (John) O'Connell, of Bankston; three sons, Douglas (Janet) Fern, of Dubuque, Mark "Fuzzy" (Pam) Fern, of Farley, and Jess Fern, of Steator, Ill.; a daughter-in-law, Jayne Fern, of Dubuque; 23 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Catherine (Charles) Wolfe, of Farley, and Christina (Cledis) Kelley.

She also was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Erin Fern, in 1943; a son, Thomas K. Fern, in 1992; four brothers, John, James, William and Donald; and a sister, Mary "Lorelei" Callahan.

An Elizabeth M. Fern Freeze Memorial Fund has been established.
