FARLEY, Iowa - Joseph R. Comer, 90, of 1177 Seventh St. SW, Dyersville, formerly of Farley, died at 3:27 a.m. Sunday, April 24, 2005, at Shady Rest Care Center, Cascade.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Farley, with the Rev. Dennis Cain officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Farley. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. today at Reiff Funeral Home, Farley, where the Farley American Legion and Farley American Legion Auxiliary will meet at 7 p.m., the Farley Fire Department will meet at 7:15 p.m. and where there will be a wake service at 7:30 p.m.

Mr. Comer farmed all of his life in the rural Farley area on the family farm, which was designated a Century farm in 1977.

He was born on April 16, 1915, on the family farm in rural Farley (John's Creek), son of John and Katherine (Coleman) Comer. He received his education in the former John's Creek school.

He married Stella C. Schockemoehl on April 27, 1943, at St. Paul's Catholic Church, Worthington; she preceded him in death on March 1, 1992. In 1992, he moved to Dyersville.

Joe served as the mayor of John's Creek.

He was a member of St. Joseph's Parish in Farley, and its Altar and Rosary Society.

Surviving are four daughters, Jolene (Dan) Rahe, of Dyersville, Donna (Pat) Strief, of Farley, Lori (Don) Allen, of East Dubuque, Ill., and Gail (Bruce) Maiers, of Cedar Rapids; three sons, Kenneth (Diana) Comer, of Farley, Jerome (Joyce) Comer, of Worthington, and Randy Comer, of Dubuque; 19 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; and five nieces.

He also was preceded in death by his parents; two grandchildren, Renae Comer, on Feb. 20, 1974, and Christina Strief, on Feb. 3, 1973; a brother, John Comer; and a sister, Marie Leytem.

A Joseph R. Comer Memorial Fund has been established.

The family of Joe would like to thank the staff of the Ellen Kennedy Living Center in Dyersville, the staff of Shady Rest Care Center in Cascade, and Hospice of Dubuque for all the care and support given to Joe and the family.
