Telegraph Herald (Dubuque, IA) - Monday, November 8, 2010

FARLEY, Iowa - Carmen Jewel Chapman, 88, of 106 Third Ave. SW, Farley, was placed in God's loving arms at 3:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 6, 2010, at The Finley Hospital, Dubuque.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 9, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Farley, with the Rev. Dennis Cain officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Farley. Friends may call from 3 to

8 p.m. today at Reiff Funeral Home, Farley, where there will be a wake service at 7 p.m.

She was born on April 21, 1922, in Dyersville, the eldest of nine children of Charles and Sedelle (Rohenkohl) Westermeyer.

She married the love of her life, Gerald E. Chapman, D.V.M., on Oct. 25, 1947; he preceded her in death. For 60 years, they loved and laughed together.

By far, Carmen's greatest passion was to create a loving home for her 10 children and their friends. Long talks in her sun room and laughs around the kitchen table were her idea of heaven on earth. Carmen was a devoted wife and mother with a talent for quilting and writing. Beautiful music filled her home. She had a sense of contentment, complimentary style, and an eye for beauty. The mischievous sense of humor she inherited from her mother, Sedelle, was ever present. Handing out Halloween candy dressed as a frightening witch caught the attention of multiple generations of trick-or-treaters at the Chapman house. Carmen was truly a classic beauty.

She will be forever cherished by her eight daughters, Sheila Chapman, Chris (John) Ganomcar, Gail (Mark) Blumberg, Denise (David) Crawford, Carla Taylor, Deborah (John) Moore, Julie (Gerald) Pins and Lisa (Richard) Fulton; her sons, Jeff (Theresa) Chapman and John (Lorna) Chapman; her 24 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and four sisters, Marylyn Klein, Beverly (Ray) Green, Sandy (Bob) Faltermeir and Joyce Schaetzle.

She also was preceded in death by her granddaughter, Ashley Pins; a sister, June Lukan; and brothers, Carlton, Carlos and Gary.

Online condolences may be left for the family at www.reifffuneralhomeinc.com.
