Dr. A. Michael Hess, 89, of Alachua, Fla., and formerly of Worthington and West Union, Iowa, and Rockford, Ill., died June 4, 2001, at his residence after a long illness. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, June 7, 2001, at Kramer Funeral Home in Dyersville, where there will be a parish rosary at 7 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, June 8, 2001, at St. Francis Xavier Basilica in Dyersville, with burial in St. Paul Cemetery, Worthington. American Legion Post 137 will accord military honors.

Dr. Hess was born in 1911 in Worthington, Iowa. He completed his pre-medical studies at Loras College in Dubuque and graduated from the University of Iowa College of Medicine in 1939. After an internship at St. Mary's Hospital in Madison, Wis., he practiced general medicine in West Union until 1954. During World War II he served with distinction in the Army Air Corps as a flight surgeon. He later practiced urology in Rockford, Ill., after completing his residency at Barnes Hospital, St. Louis, Mo., in 1957.

After retiring in 1971, he lived in South Florida before moving to Alachua in January 2000. Michael Hess was a life-long Catholic and a member of St. Madeleine's Catholic Church in High Springs, Fla.

Dr. Hess is survived by three sons, James Michael Hess of Rockford, Ill., Dr. R. Thomas Hess and Stephen Jon Hess, both of Alachua, Fla., and a daughter, Mary Cait Harris of Seminole, Fla.; a sister, Geraldine Engler of Dyersville; and two brothers, Gerald Hess of Dyersville and Donald Hess of Clear Lake; five grandchildren and a great-grandson.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 47 years, Marjorie Lane, on June 2, 1983; three sons, John David, Timothy John and Michael Anthony; a sister, Florabelle Heiser; and three brothers, Ronald, Harold and Ambrose Hess.
