WORTHINGTON, Iowa - Aloysius N. Gassmann, 95, formerly of Worthington, died after a lengthy illness Tuesday, Aug. 28, 2001, at Luther Manor, Dubuque.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Paul's Catholic Church, Worthington, with the Rev. Herb Tegeler officiating. Burial will be in St. Paul Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 9 p.m. today at the Kramer Funeral Home, Dyersville, where there will be a St. Paul Altar and Rosary Society rosary at 4 p.m. and a parish scripture service at 7 p.m.

Mr. Gassmann's original occupation was as a mechanic at his own garage in Petersburg. He then farmed in Luxemburg and Worthington from 1945 until his retirement.

He was born on April 2, 1906, in Holy Cross, son of Frank and Elizabeth (Ruden) Gassmann. He married Leonette Kluesner on Nov. 23, 1926, in Luxemburg.

He was a member of the St. Paul Altar and Rosary Society.

Surviving are five daughters, Eileen (William) Besler, of Dubuque, Betty Gotto, of Bankston, Gladys (Paul) Knepper, of Dubuque, Mary Agnes (James) Schnier, of Bellevue, and Connie Lueck, of Benton; six sons, Lyle Gassmann, of Dubuque, LeRoy (Marge) Gassmann, of Asbury, Robert (Bev) Gassmann, of St. Landry, La., Marvin (Pat) Gassmann, of New Vienna, Kenneth Gassmann, of Barrego Springs, Calif., and Gerald Gassmann, of Davenport; 75 grandchildren; 147 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; and many step grandchildren, step great-grandchildren and step great-great-grandchildren; a son-in-law, Robert Fitzgerald, of Dyersville; a daughter-in-law, Betty Hermsen-Gassmann, of Dyersville; two brothers, Francis (Bernice) Gassmann, of Strawberry Point, and Harold (Bernice) Gassmann, of Dyersville; two sisters, Cecelia Hennen and Leora Seymour, both of Dubuque; and two sisters-in-law, Rita Gassmann and Alvina Gassmann, both of Dyersville.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Leonette, on Dec. 20, 1985; a daughter, Sylvia Fitzgerald; a son, John Gassmann; two sons-in-law, Merle Lueck and Sylvester "Butch" Gotto; a daughter-in-law, Grace Demmer; a grandchild, Mitchell Gassmann; two great-grandchildren, Matthew and Haley Gotto; four brothers, Cletus, Arnold, Clarence and Cyril Gassmann; two sisters, Mathilda Ries and Germaine Heying.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Luther Manor, Dubuque, and St. Paul's Church, Worthington.
